From Umm Al Quwain to Dubai and back

Page update - Oct 16, 2022

If you stay in a hotel in the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain, you will unlikely be satisfied with the local entertainments. Apart from the DreamLand Waterpark, there is nowhere to go. So many tourists want at least a day to go to Dubai to see the Dubai Dancing Fountains, the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall.

How much does such a trip cost? Which option is more convenient, faster, cheaper? Read more on this page.

Prices, timetables and other information on this page were updated in October 2022. Starting September 28, 2022, the UAE has abolished the mask wearing in stores, restaurants, and hotels. HOWEVER! Don't forget that these exemptions did not apply to transport.

Distance between Umm Al Quwain and Dubai

It is not large: 43 miles (70 kilometers) between the centers of the cities and only 17 miles (28 kilometers) between the borders of the emirates.

Option 1 - taxi

You can catch a cab right on the street or in the parking lot. Almost any cab driver is happy to go to Dubai, they are all used to it. And even if someone refuses, there will be another cab driver nearby very quickly, who will gladly agree.

A metered cab ride costs 120-150 dirhams and takes 30-40 minutes, the exact price and time depend on the destination in Dubai and traffic situation. See our page "Money in the UAE" for the current exchange rates of dirham. See our page "Taxis in the UAE" for the taxi fares.

We recommend going to the Etisalat Metro Station which is the closest to the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain. From there, travel around Dubai by subway, it's faster and much cheaper. Read our review "Dubai Metro - ticket prices and map".

Option 2 - order a transfer

If you order a transfer online, the trip will be even more expensive than by cab. Now the average price is USD 55. There is no point in ordering a transfer, it is easier and more profitable to take a cab.

Option 3 - bus

The Emirate of Umm Al Quwain is the smallest in the UAE by population. Umm Al Quwain does not have its own public transport system except for cabs. However, buses from other emirates transit through the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain.

A few years ago there was the E601 bus between Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah. This bus was guaranteed to stop in Umm Al Quwain. However, this route has now been cancelled.

Now there is only the Al-Hamra route between Ras Al-Khaimah and Dubai, which we talked about in the review "How to get from Ras Al-Khaimah to Dubai". These buses can stop in Umm Al Quwain, or they can pass by the emirate on the E311 highway. That is to say, this option is without guarantees.

If you want to take your chance, come to the stop near the Police Department (UAQ Traffic Department) and wait for the bus. If you are lucky, it will take you 25 dirhams and 40 minutes to get to Dubai's Union Square metro station.

We don't recommend this option. The next option is better.

Option 4 - cab to Ajman + bus

This option is a little more expensive, but 100% guaranteed and very convenient. You can take a cab directly from the hotel to the neighboring Emirate of Ajman. The cab ride will cost 50-60 dirhams. Take a cab to Al Musalla Bus Station.

Then from Ajman it is convenient to take a bus. Find the prices and timetable in the review "How to get from Ajman to Dubai".

Find your hotel

Option 5 - bus to Ajman + bus Ajman-Dubai

This option is even cheaper, although less convenient. First, you need to get from your hotel to Lulu Station (near the supermarket and the LuLu Center). You can walk from many hotels as it is close.

Then take the bus E400 or E411 to Ajman. It runs about once an hour from 7 am to 9 pm (7-00 to 21-00). The fare is 10 dirhams with a MASAAR card or 15 dirhams for cash.

You will arrive in 25 minutes in Ajman to Al Musalla Bus Station. From there you will take the bus to Dubai. Find the prices and timetable in the review "How to get from Ajman to Dubai".

Option 6 - sharing-taxi

This is how guest workers from India, Iran, Pakistan, and other countries travel. They cooperate together and take a cab. It's very cheap. In the UAE, this way of travel is very popular with guest workers.

Those who want to take a ride like this usually gather near the Police Department. If you're not afraid to travel together with unfamiliar people then you can arrange a joint ride with them. We do NOT recommend this option for women.

Have a pleasant travelling in the UAE, and read our interesting pages about this country (see the list of the pages below).
