From Sharjah Airport (SHJ) to city

Page update - Sep 24, 2022

How to get from Sharjah Airport (code: SHJ) to the city cheaply and conveniently? What are the cab fares? What are the buses to the city? How to get to Dubai and other emirates? Read the answers on our page.

Prices, schedules and other information on this page were updated in September 2022. Sharjah Airport is now operational as usual. Do not forget about the strict covid-safety measures in transport in the UAE. Face masks are still mandatory inside all transport and indoors now.

In case of the Sharjah Airport, there is a special (increased) fare of 20 dirhams for boarding. The price for a kilometer (0.6 mile) of ride is standart - 2 dirhams. See our page "UAE currency" for the current exchange rate of the dirham.

The cost of a trip to the hotel is from 30 to 60 dirhams, it depends on the location of the hotel (distance from the airport). The rule is simple: the closer the hotel to the sea, the more expensive the cab will be. The most expensive rides are to hotels in the Al Khalidiah area, which is close to the Sharjah Aquarium and Al Khan Beach.

You don't have to pay in dirhams, you can do so in euros, dollars, pounds. However, the rates offered by cab drivers are usually bad. If the official exchange rate is 1:3.75 (US dollar/UAE dirham), cab drivers count for 1:3.5 or even worse. It is better to change a small amount at the airport, where are exchange offices with acceptable rates. Read our page "How to change currency in the UAE".

There is no shortage of cabs at the airport. There is no point in booking a cab or transfer in advance. However, keep in mind....

The most common scam

All cabs in the UAE are required to have and use a taximeter. Some cab drivers want to negotiate a fixed fee, and there is nothing wrong with that, as long as the price is suitable.

But there are cases a cab driver does not turn on the meter, brings tourists to the right point and starts demanding excessive money. Unfortunately, such cases are not singular. There have been cases tourists were charged 200 dirhams and even 400 dirhams.

Be aware that any trip without a meter is against the law in the UAE. You can safely contact the police, the phone number is "999". How and where to buy a local SIM card at the airport, read in our review "How to call from the UAE".

Can UBER and Careem save money?

UBER and Careem work in Sharjah now, but you will not save much money. Now UBER fares will cost even more, and Careem fares are comparable to the price of an ordinary cab.

In addition, you will need to wait for an UBER or Careem car, while ordinary cabs are usually available immediately.

Ordering a transfer in advance

You can book your transfer online in advance, but it will cost 20-30% more than a regular cab. Why waste your time and energy searching for and ordering a transfer? We do not see the point in it.

There are 4 city bus routes from the airport. All have a fare of AED 8 for cash and AED 6 for Sayer Transport Card payment. Running hours are from 6am to 11pm (except 99 that is 24-hours). How the buses look like see the photo near, click on the photo to enlarge to full screen.

Route 14. Goes to the coast to Khalid lake and the Al Majaz area. Then turns to the east and goes to the station Al Sharq in the eastern part of the city. The interval is 15-20 minutes.

Route 15. Goes to the coast to the terminal at Rolla Square, next to the Museum of Islamic Civilization. The interval is 25-40 minutes.

Route 88. Goes to the coast to the terminal at Rolla Square, but a slightly different road. The interval is 12-20 minutes.

Attention! For the 88 bus, the stop at the airport is not starting (terminal). So be careful, don't confuse the direction.

Route 99. Goes to the coast to the bus terminal in the Jubail area (Al Jubail Bus Station), next to the central market. Traffic interval is 10-20 minutes, this route is 24 hours. It is the Al Jubail Bus Station from where all the intercity buses (to other emirates) run from.

It's hard to know if any of these buses stop near your hotel. The best advice is to take the 15, 88, or 99 and go to Rolla or Jubail. There you can take a cab to the hotel. That way you can save your money and take a cab to the hotel for 13.5-20 dirhams.

If you want to learn more, the official website of the Sharjah Transportation Authority at has maps of routes.

Tips for tourists

- In the Emirate of Sharjah, the sale of alcohol is prohibited. You can buy alcohol only in Duty Free stores at the airport. Don't forget to do it if you need to. Read our review "Alcohol in the UAE" for details;

- Buying a DU or Etisalat SIM-card for calls or Internet is better in the airport terminal, there are the offices of both operators. Read our review "Internet in the UAE" about which tariff to choose;

- According to UAE federal law, children have to travel in a safety seat if inside a car. So if you come with children, you may have to wait for a cab with a safety seat. Read more in our review "Vacation in the UAE with children".

Have a great holiday in Sharjah, and read our interesting pages about the UAE (see list of the pages below).
