Page update - Nov 03, 2022
It is possible to travel between Dubai and Abu-Dhabi for free, but there are a lot of nuances! Read this page carefully and you'll probably decide not to take the risk and use a paid option. About the usual (paid) ways, read our detailed review "How to get from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and back".
Good news! Starting summer 2022, free buses between Dubai and Abu Dhabi are running again. Awesome! They were canceled in 2020 because of the coronavirus. They didn't run for two years, but now they are running again. By the situation of October 2022 there are 2 routes (there were 5 before the pandemic). The stop locations have changed. Read all the details below on this page.
There are 2 free buses from the malls in Dubai to Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. That is, if you need to go downtown to see the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, the Heritage Village or the Louvre, this option is NOT suitable.
To board the free bus, you must have a pre-purchased e-ticket to one of these parks. The phrase "We'll buy tickets there at the ticket office" does not allow you to ride. The bus drivers do not check tickets often, but do not risk to count on this.
Boarding is on a first-come, first-served basis. Accordingly, there is a probability that there will not be enough seats. Of course, the chances of such an event is almost zero on weekdays. But it is rather possible on weekends and holidays.
Weekends in the UAE from January 3, 2022, are Friday from noon, Saturday, and Sunday, as Friday is the holy day of the week in Islam. Read more in our review "Weekend and Friday in the UAE". For a schedule of national holidays, see our review "Holidays in the UAE".

The buses leave at 11 am (11-00) from each mall. If you're late, you'll have to get there the usual (paid) way, and you've already lost precious time.
This is a free service, and therefore no one guarantees anything. If the driver gets sick or the bus breaks down, there will be no replacement, you will wait at the bus stop until "the grass to grow".
You need to find the place near the mall where the bus leaves from, and this can be difficult. It is better to go straight to the information desk at the mall and ask, they will explain how to go.
From the Deira City Centre Mall, the bus leaves from the northwest entrance, where Majid al Futtaim Tower 1 is. Departure at 11 am (11-00), arriving at Yas Island at 1 pm (13-00).
From the Mall of the Emirates, the bus leaves from the Sheraton Mall of the Emirates Hotel, this is the northeast side of the building. Departure at 11 am (11-00), arrival at Yas Island at 12-30 pm (12-30).
The bus back to the Deira City Centre Mall departs at 8 pm (20-00) from Ferrari Park and at 8-10 pm (20-10) from Warner Bros and Yas Waterworld.
The bus back to the Mall of the Emirates departs at 7-30 pm (19-30) from Ferrari Park and at 7-40 pm (19-40) from Warner Bros and Yas Waterworld.
The return bus is convenient for tourists. First, you will have a ticket to the park in any case, you can use it to get in. Secondly, the stops are located conveniently, they are easy to find. Third, you will find a place for sure in one of the buses.
