Yas Mall - Guide for Tourists

Page update - Feb 27, 2022

Yas Mall is the largest shopping mall in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the second largest in the UAE, second only to Dubai Mall in the Emirate of Dubai. Located on man-made Yas Island in the eastern suburbs of Abu Dhabi.

Yas Mall has a shopping area of 2,500,000 square feet (232,000 square meters), it is smaller than Dubai Mall by half (5,400,000 sq.ft., 502,000 sq.m.). There are 400 stores, 90 restaurants, cafes and fast food outlets, several amusement parks, a hypermarket and the VOX Cinema with 20 halls.

There is no point in talking about all the stores and attractions on this page. For example, Nike or Mango stores in the UAE are not very different from other countries. Let's focus on those stores and entertainment venues that are not available in other countries.

As of February 2022, Yas Mall is in operation. The VOX movie theater is working again. Strict covid-security measures are in effect. Be aware, face masks are still mandatory in Abu Dhabi and all the UAE.

How to get there

If you are vacationing in one of the hotels on Yas Island, it is convenient to take the free Yas Island Shuttle bus. This bus runs between the Yas Plaza Hotels (hotels area) and all the attractions on the island. If you don't know where the nearest Yas Island Shuttle stop is then ask at the hotel reception.

If you are vacationing in the central Abu Dhabi area, you will need to take to Abu Dhabi Bus Station or Zayed Sport City and then bus line 102. Get out near Ferrari World park as it is not to be confused with anything else.

Alternatively take a cab from the city center to Yas Mall for about 70 UAE dirhams. For taxi fares, see our review "Taxis in Dubai and Abu Dhabi", and for the current exchange rate, see the review "Dirhams of the Arab Emirates".

From Dubai, you can take the E100 or E101 bus to Abu-Dhabi Bus Station, then take bus 102. There are other ways to get from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, read our review "How to get from Dubai to Abu Dhabi".

From other emirates, it is difficult, expensive and long to get to Abu Dhabi. You have to take buses to Abu Dhabi. There are direct buses from Sharjah, but you have to change from Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. We don't see the point of visiting especially Yas Mall from these emirates.

Opening hours

Friday and Saturday: from 10 am to midnight (10-00 to 00-00).

Sunday through Thursday: from 10 am to 10 pm (10-00 to 22-00).

How much time to plan

If you come just to see or have a snack, 1-1.5 hours is enough.

If you want to visit some interesting stores and the supermarket, then plan a half day.

If you decide to take the kids on rides and see all the interesting stores, a whole day might not be enough.

Figures, Facts, History

The construction and opening of Yas Mall has been delayed several times. In 2014, it turned out that the surrounding facilities were already in operation (Ferrari World park, Yas Waterworld, Yas Marina racetrack), while the Yas Mall was still under construction. It even had the interesting nickname "the lost piece of the Yas Island puzzle" attached to it at the time.

Originally scheduled to open in February 2014, it was postponed until November 2014. Waiting was no longer an option, the opening was timed to coincide with the Formula 1 Grand Prix.

On November 19, 2014, the grand opening took place.

- The construction cost AED 7,35 billion (USD 2 billion);

- There are 108 elevators;

- Underground parking for 10,000 cars;

- There were 10,000 workers involved in the construction work. Of course, these were not local Arabs, but guest workers from India, Pakistan, and other countries. Read our review "Citizens and visitors in the UAE" about them;

- There were 36 fixed cranes and 50 mobile cranes involved in this grand construction project (pictured right, click on photo to enlarge);

- Yas Mall communicates directly with Ferrari World park;

- It took 90 million gallons (340,000 cubic meters) of concrete, 20,500 miles (33,000 kilometers) of steel beams, 745 miles (1,200 kilometers) of electrical cable, 600 tons of ductwork, 1,075,000 square feet (100,000 square meters) of natural limestone, and 485,000 square feet (45,000 square meters) of other stone for flooring;

- The first Apple store in Abu Dhabi opened there;

- Abu Dhabi's first and so far only LEGO store opened there. Then it was the largest in the UAE, but now the new record LEGO store has opened in LEGOLAND Park in Dubai.

Where to eat & what to eat

The choice is enormous. Yas Mall has about 90 restaurants, eateries, cafes, and other fast food outlets. Of these, 25 are large, full-service restaurants. Of those that are familiar to most tourists: McDonalds, Pizza Hat, Subway, KFC, Cinnabon, Burger King, Baskin Robbins.

Some places are on the food court on the 1st level. Follow the signs "Food Court" to find it. Some are spread throughout the mall.

The most interesting restaurant at Yas Mall is called ROLLERCOASTER RESTAURANT (pictured left, click on photo to enlarge). Food and drinks arrive to visitors on special rails on small wagons, simulating a roller coaster ride. It is worth seeing. The restaurant has a capacity of 360 visitors, so you don't have to wait in line.

Where to buy alcohol

As of now (February 2022), there is no liquor store at Yas Mall. Let's say more - there is not a single liquor store on Yas Island. Alcohol is only in the hotels bars there.

Entertainment

Adventure HQ Entertainment Center

Occupies an area of 12,000 square feet (1,115 square meters) on the first floor, place L1-162.

It is a children's entertainment center with a climbing wall, rope bridges and paths, a bungee cord, and a sports store.

But the main and interesting attraction is the artificial cave system. Children can feel like real explorers and speleologists there. There are only two such attractions in the world now, the first in Yas Mall, the second in Ireland. Note: we talk about a really large artificial cave system, not the small ones which are hundreds.

Children from 4 years old are allowed.

The ride is time based and costs 2 dirhams per minute. The minimum stay is 30 minutes (60 dirhams minimum).

Dream Aero

This is a real flight simulator on a Boeing 737 NG airliner. This is the kind of simulator used to train pilots. During the session, the visitor controls the virtual plane, with an instructor at his side.

Price: 300 dirhams for 15 minutes, 550 dirhams for 30 minutes.

Other entertainment

The VOX Cinema with 20 halls is of little interest to foreign tourists.

The Fun Works Children's Entertainment Center has a large playground, educational workshops, merry-go-rounds, cars, other attractions, game machines, and a pool with balloons. All this is available in shopping malls all over the world, and we do not see the point of wasting precious vacation time in the UAE in this center.

Yas Mall has its own Candylicious store, but it is much smaller than the Candylicious store at Dubai Mall.

Softair BattleZon is a 2-9 person shooting range and battle ground using AirSoft weapons, an electro-pneumatic weapon that shoots small plastic balls and looks like a real weapon. AirSoft weapons are sold and used in shooting ranges everywhere, so there is no point in wasting time.

Carrefour hypermarket

You can buy many colorful UAE gifts in this hypermarket: dates, camel milk and dairy products. You can see the prices and understand how expensive life in the Arab Emirates is. At Geant Hypermarket there is a large electronics section and various discounts are always available.

Indoor ski slope

Apparently, the administration of Yas Mall is bothered by the fact that the UAE has only one indoor Ski Dubai ski slope in Dubai at the Mall of the Emirates. Now Yas Mall is building a similar slope, and the opening date has not yet been announced.

Good to know

- There are dancing fountains at the southern end of the mall. It is certainly not the Dubai Fountain in scale, but it is still nice to see;

- YAS Mall has six currency exchange offices and bank branches. Exchange rates are good. Read our review "Where and how to change money in the UAE";

- YAS Mall has offices of mobile operators Etisalat and DU, both located on the ground floor. If you dare to buy a local SIM, you are there. Read our reviews "Cheap internet in the UAE" and "Cheap calls from the UAE".

Have a great time at Yas Mall, and read our interesting reviews about Abu Dhabi and the UAE (see the list of the reviews below).
