MOTIONGATE Park - Guide for Tourists

Page update - Oct 28, 2022

The MOTIONGATE theme park in the Emirate of Dubai is called "Desert Hollywood". It is Dubai's flagship amusement park. What attractions await visitors? How to get there? How much is the entrance ticket, and how to save money? Read in detail on this page.

As of October 2022, MOTIONGATE park is open. Starting September 28, 2022, Dubai and other emirates have canceled the requirement to wear masks indoors: in stores, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants. However! Masks are still required inside the MOTIONGATE park (inside the indoor parts of the park), and the park administration mentions this separately. We advise you to take a face mask with you.

Brief Description

MOTIONGATE Park is located in the west of the city of Dubai, in the DPR (Dubai Parks and Resorts) area. This is a special area of the city, which was allocated for amusement parks in Dubai following the example of Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. Within DPR are other amusement parks: LEGOLAND, LEGOLAND Waterpark, BOLLYWOOD.

The MOTIONGATE park covers about 92 acres (37 hectares) and is the largest park in DPR. There are 30 attractions, although some of them can hardly be called full attractions as they are children's playgrounds or shows with artists.

Among them are 5 roller coaster rides, including one of the newest generation of Infinity Coaster and two by the legendary company Mack Rides. Also: 3 merry-go-rounds, 2 swing rides, 3 4D movie theaters, 4 cartoon rides, 4 playgrounds, 6 show programs.

There are a few unusual rides that you are unlikely to find anywhere else. This is a ride on the river with rapids and "falling from the tower" 190 feet (58 meters) high. The rides set is decent, no doubt about it.

MOTIONGATE park is divided into 4 zones according to the movie studios: DreamWorks, Columbia Pictures, Lionsgate, and Sony Pictures (The Smurfs).

The Columbia Pictures, Lionsgate, Sony Pictures (The Smurfs) zones occupy the front half of the park. Warning, this is the outdoor part of the park, and the sun in the UAE is strong and dangerous. Be careful, don't forget your sunscreen and read our review "UAE weather by month".

The DreamWorks area is completely indoor and occupies the far half of the park. The DreamWorks area is divided into its 4 subzones according to the cartoons: Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, and How to Train Your Dragon.

The alley called Studio Central leads from the entrance to the central plaza, where there are cafes, stores, and restaurants. Navigation in the park is very simple. From the central square: to the left is the Lionsgate area, to the right are the Columbia and Smurfs areas, in front of you is the DreamWorks area.

Who is the MOTIONGATE park aimed at?

First of all for children from 8 to 16 years old.

Theoretically, a child of 3 feet 5 inches (105 centimeters) high (usually 4.5 years old) can already ride all but three rides. But in fact, half of the rides are not suitable for most small children - very dark or quite scary.

Adrenaline rides are only three - Zombieland Blast-off tower and roller coasters Capitol Bullet Train and Madagascar Mad Pursuit.

There are interesting playgrounds and simple rides for small children. But is it worth going to MOTIONGATE and paying expensive tickets for that? This is an open question.

We will tell you about all the attractions and height (age) restrictions in the second part of this page.

If you are a fan of Madagascar, How to Train Your Dragon, Smurfs, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Shrek, Kung Fu Panda cartoons, then the MOTIONGATE theme park will be the best gift.

How to get there

It is expensive or long to get there. We give all prices in Emirati dirhams below. See our page "Money in the UAE" for the current exchange rates.

The first way is subway + bus. Take the Dubai Metro to Ibn Battuta station (first, red line). From there, the DPR1 bus goes directly to the park. The bus fare is 5 dirhams, paid by NOL card. See our review "Dubai Metro" for the fares and the subway map with all the last updates.

The DPR1 bus is running now. This route did not stop even during the lockdown in the spring of 2020.

To know the exact time, so you don't have to stand and wait for the bus, we give you the exact timetable of the DPR1 bus from the RTA. This timetable is current for the year 2022. Recall that as of January 3, 2022 there are different weekends in the UAE, and accordingly the schedules of all buses have changed.

The way is the cheapest, but inconvenient. The thing is that the DPR1 bus only runs once every 1 hour 15 minutes.

The second way is subway + cab. Take the Dubai Metro to Ibn Battuta station, and then take a cab to the park. The cab trip will cost about 50 dirhams.

A little cheaper way is to go to the end of the red line, to the UAE Exchange station, where a cab will cost 35-40 dirhams. However, a subway ride in this case is likely to cost a little more, since UAE Exchange is already in the next fare zone. It can be difficult to catch a cab at the UAE Exchange station, because the station is not busy.

The third way is a cab from the hotel. It is the most convenient option, but also the most expensive. Dubai is a very big city, and it is impossible to predict the trip cost. It can be from 40 to 120 dirhams, depending on the location of the hotel. See our review "Taxis in Dubai" for the actual fares.

Ticket price

Tickets can be purchased online at or at the ticket office at the entrance. It is better to buy in advance on the website. First of all, when you buy in advance on the website there is a discount, about which is below.

Secondly, the ticket office only sells tickets when the capacity limits allow. The capacity of the park is limited by covid security measures. If the park is full, they will not sell tickets at the ticket office.

Warning. All tickets cannot be returned, exchanged, re-sold or re-issued to another person.

All prices below include VAT. It is possible to buy a ticket with an exact date of visit (dated) or open date of visit (flexible). This ticket may be used within 6 months from the date of purchase.

- Flexible tickets are temporarily unavailable;

- The price of a dated ticket when purchased online is 295 dirhams;

- Dated ticket price (exact date) as of today - 330 dirhams;

- At the box office - 330 dirhams;

Many tourists think it is expensive. However, such prices are quite usual for the UAE, as having fun in Dubai is expensive. Do you want to get cheaper? Then read our review "How to buy tickets to Dubai parks cheap".

Children under 3 years old are free, but proof of age is required. That is, take your child's ID or passport with you.

An important point! All tickets are personal. To enter the park on a ticket purchased on the website you must have an ID or passport. Some tourists ask, what if the child is "written in" the parent's passport? (some countries do such a thing) Answer: if your child is "written in" on the passport you will not be allowed to enter the UAE.

If you want to visit the MOTIONGATE park twice (two days), it is advantageous to buy the Annual Pass, which is valid for 12 months. The price is 495 dirhams.

If you want to visit any two parks in DPR, it is advantageous to buy a combo-ticket, but it will be valid for one day. The price is 355 dirhams.

Working hours

Summer season (May 1 - September 14) - from 2 pm to 10 pm (from 14-00 to 22-00).

Winter season (September 15 - April 30) - from 11 am to 8 pm (from 11-00 to 20-00).

On Fridays, Saturdays, and public holidays, the opening hours are extended by 1 hour (until 11 pm and 9 pm).

When to visit

As with any amusement park in the United Arab Emirates, you must come on a weekday. On weekends and holidays, the queues for rides can be huge. You can see how many people are in the park on weekends in the photo near, click on the photo to enlarge to full screen.

For a schedule of UAE public holidays, see our review "Holidays in the UAE".

Weekends in the UAE starting January 3, 2022, are Friday from 12 noon, Saturday and Sunday. Read more in our review "Friday in the UAE".

The best days are from Monday through Thursday.

This is an addition to the ticket that allows you to enter any attraction without queuing. This is a common practice for amusement parks in the UAE. So don't be surprised if someone passes without a queue.

The price of Q-Fast MOTIONGATE is 199 dirhams.

Due to covid security measures the number of visitors at the park is limited. There are no large queues and it does not make much sense to skip the Q-Fast.

MOTIONGATE Park is staffed by local photographers. At the end of the day, come up to their booth and pick up all your photos if you bought a DigiPass. If you didn't buy one, you have to pay for each photo separately.

The price of the DigiPass MOTIONGATE is 220 dirhams.

Nanny ticket

MOTIONGATE and other theme parks in the UAE have special tickets for babysitters. In our case, such a ticket costs only 50 dirhams.

Unfortunately you can't save money by impersonating your wife, grandmother, sister, or anyone else as a nanny. In order to buy such a ticket, you need to have a nanny officially working in the UAE.

Lionsgate area

This zone is the smallest in terms of number of rides and square footage. However, this is where the most extreme roller coaster in MOTIONGATE Park is located.

Capitol Bullet Train

Height and/or age limit: 4 feet 3 inches (130 centimeters).

The only really large ride in the Lionsgate area. It's a classic roller coaster, and it's pretty scary. There's a full loop and a 360 degree turn. Too bad it's only a very short 30 second ride.

This ride for the MOTIONGATE park was created by the legendary German company Mack Rides, which has been building rides for 100 years.

Panem Aerial Tour

Height and/or age limit: 3 feet 3 inches (100 centimeters).

This is a 4D movie theater. The height restriction is due to the fact that a child shorter simply won't see the screen. There's nothing scary about this attraction. During the ride you will participate in the aerial attack of the rebels on the Capitol from the Hunger Games movies series.

Step Up Dubai, All In!

Height and/or age restrictions: none.

This is the scene of a dance show based on the Step Up movie. Street dance lovers will love it, others probably not.

The Smurfs' Village area

This is the children's part of the MOTIONGATE park, dedicated to the little blue creatures Smurfs from the 80s cartoon series of the same name. The Smurfs' series is very popular all over the world.

The area consists of several buildings, so it is even difficult to call it the word "village". A more correct name would be "Smurf Farm".

Smurf Village Express

Height and/or age restrictions: from 3 feet 5 inches (105 centimeters).

A small children's roller coaster. There are no steep descents and moreover rolls, although there are a couple of exciting moments. Ride time is only 30 seconds, so the rides take two laps.

Smurfs Studio Tours

Height and/or age restrictions: from 2 feet 11 inches (90 centimeters).

Visitors board small wagons and ride slowly along the Smurfs movie studio scenery. The scenery is beautiful, and the smurfs' voices can be heard talking about what's going on.

Smurfberry Factory

Height and/or age restrictions: none.

This is a small play area with a soft maze and air cannons that shoot soft balls. As conceived by the creators of the attraction, the balls should represent the berries that gather smurfs. However, the balls are very ordinary, not even painted, and the symbolism is not obvious.

Woodland Play Park

Height and/or age restrictions: none.

Large mesh maze. Very interesting for children, but it is a bit difficult to climb for adults. You will have to do it, because kids should only be on this attraction when accompanied by an adult.

Smurfs Village Playhouse

Height and/or age restrictions: none.

It's a small movie theater that shows a smurf cartoon and this cartoon is run by children along with a presenter. Also smurfs from the screen give tasks and play games with visitors. Not a bad entertainment.

Columbia Pictures area

Second in size and number of attractions, but for adult visitors it is the most interesting.

Zombieland Blast-off

Height and/or age limit: 4 feet 3 inches (130 centimeters).

This is the classic 'fall from the tower' ride. It refers to the famous scene from the movie Zombieland (2009) where the two main characters escape from zombies in just such a ride. In Dubai, the tower is much higher - 190 feet (58 meters), while the original tower from the movie Pacific Playland (USA) is only 46 feet (14 meters) high.

Hotel Transylvania

Height and/or age restrictions: from 2 feet 11 inches (90 centimeters).

Visitors board wagons and ride slowly along the sets of the Hotel Transylvania from the animated movie Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. Despite the scary theme, the ride is not scary at all, and like the movie, is more of a comedy.

This attraction is considered the pride of MOTIONGATE Park. The castle scenery covers an area of 30,000 square feet (2,800 square meters) and the ride lasts 7 minutes.

The Green Hornet: High Speed Chase

Height and/or age restrictions: from 3 feet 5 inches (105 centimeters).

This is a roller coaster dedicated to the character of the Green Hornet. The movie about him is The Green Hornet (2011). The ride is not fast at all, there are only a couple of exciting twists and turns.

Underworld 4D

Height and/or age restrictions: none.

A 4D movie theater based on the "Underworld" movie series where vampires and werewolves fight. The movie is pretty scary, there are bloody scenes. The MOTIONGATE park administration strongly recommends that children only attend from the age of 15.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: River Expedition

Height and/or age restrictions: from 3 feet 5 inches (105 centimeters).

Group rafting down an artificial river on a large bun. There's splashing from the river and splashing along the route, so you'll have to get a little wet. The river is mostly slow, but in a few places there are fast and sharp rapids, even a little scary. The river is decorated with the cartoon "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" theme, and of course there is a predatory hamburger from the cartoon, but small and not scary at all.

Ghostbusters: Battle For New York

Height and/or age restrictions: from 2 feet 11 inches (90 centimeters).

A fascinating shooter attraction based on the Ghostbusters cartoon series and movies. Visitors are given laser pistols and put into a wagon that rides along the New York City scenery. Along the route, there are screens on which ghosts appear and must be shot at.

Flint's Imagination Lab

Height and/or age restrictions: none.

Children's playground based on the cartoon "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs". There is a large and interesting soft labyrinth, as well as several stands of scientific subjects. It will be interesting for children from 1 to 12 years old. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

DreamWorks area

The largest area at MOTIONGATE, taking up about half the park. The area is indoors and completely air-conditioned.

Fountain of Dreams

This fountain greets visitors at the entrance to the DreamWorks area. The fountain consists of statues of characters from Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, and How to Train Your Dragon.

Dragon Gliders

Height and/or age restrictions: from 3 feet 5 inches (105 centimeters).

This attraction is considered one of the highlights of the MOTIONGATE park. Visitors are seated in suspended chairs that travel on a rail. All around, screens show scenes based on the cartoon "How to Train Your Dragon". The main thing there is the scenery, including the huge Viking Village. The ride is not scary, the seats don't move fast, but it is very dark around so kids might get scared.

This attraction for MOTIONGATE is the work of the legendary German company Mack Rides, which has been building rides for 100 years.

Shrek's Merry Fairy Tale Journey

Height and/or age restrictions: from 2 feet 11 inches (90 centimeters).

Visitors board wagons and ride very slowly along the scenery, which shows scenes from Shrek cartoons. Fans of Shrek are guaranteed 10 minutes of fun. If you don't particularly like Shrek, you can take a ride "just for show".

Height and/or age restrictions: from 2 feet 11 inches (90 centimeters).

The usual merry-go-round based on the cartoon "Madagascar". Nothing more to add.

Madagascar Mad Pursuit!

Height and/or age limit: 4 feet 1 inch (125 centimeters).

This is the Infinity Coaster roller coaster from Gerstlauer Amusement Rides. At the time of this page was updated, there are only 10 such rides in the world and in the UAE it is the only one of its kind. The ride reaches speeds of up to 50 miles per hour (80 kilometers per hour).

The attraction is based on the cartoon "Madagascar". The visitors are flying along the scenery of the circus dome. However, the decorations are not the main thing there! The ride itself is amazing as the carriage is magnetically propelled and runs almost noiselessly.

Swamp Celebration

Height and/or age restrictions: from 3 feet 5 inches (105 centimeters).

This is a seesaw ride. Visitors are seated in a large multi-passenger gondola that rides back and forth on a semi-circular track and spins on its center axis. The ride is based on the Shrek cartoon, but you can hardly see it.

Kung Fu Panda Academy

Height and/or age restrictions: none.

This is a children's play area where an actor dressed as Panda Po will teach children kung fu moves.

Penguin Air

Height and/or age restrictions: from 2 feet 11 inches (90 centimeters).

Carousel based on the "Madagascar 2" cartoon, where penguins have rebuilt a plane and fly it. Visitors sit in mini-models of the plane and spin the pedals.

Mr. Ping's Noodle Fling

Height and/or age restrictions: from 2 feet 11 inches (90 centimeters).

This is the classic "bowl carousel''. Visitors are seated in "bowls", which are grouped into groups of three. The cups rotate in a circle and around its axis. The attraction is stylized after the Kung Fu Panda cartoon, and the cups mimic the noodle cups in Ping's noodle shop (Panda Po's foster father).

King Julien's Side Show Stomp

Height and/or age restrictions: none.

This is a show where an actor dressed as King Julien entertains children. Other characters from the Madagascar cartoon also participate in the show. The actors actively interact with the children in English.

The Swinging Viking

Height and/or age restrictions: from 3 feet 11 inches (120 centimeters).

Another seesaw ride. Visitors sit in a large rook swing. Angles of elevation are small and the ride is not terrifying.

Operation Penguin Shake

Height and/or age restrictions: none.

Another show where the penguins from the cartoon "Madagascar" are rescued from the inspector. The penguins actively dance and interact with the children.

Kung Fu Panda: Unstoppable Awesomeness

Height and/or age restrictions: from 3 feet 5 inches (105 centimeters).

4D Cinema. Shows a film about the journey down the river of the Panda Poe and companions. Naturally, the journey is not at all quiet and peaceful.

Camp Viking

Height and/or age restrictions: none.

Children's play area - Camp Viking from the cartoon "How to Train Your Dragon". There are waterboarding activities and kids can get wet.

Important tips for visitors

- There are two other parks in the UAE with a similar set of rides and similar styling. They are IMG in Dubai and Warner in Abu Dhabi. Take a closer look at them, you might even like them better. Read our in-depth reviews IMG Worlds Park and Warner Bros. Park.;

- Bringing food and drinks inside the park is prohibited. There is bag control at the entrance, but not very strict. You can bring in baby food. We recommend snacking in advance, as the prices inside the cafes and restaurants are high;

- Children under the age of 13 years must always be accompanied by an adult. That is, you can not leave a small child somewhere in the playground, and himself meanwhile go out to have fun;

- You may not bring bicycles, scooters, skateboards, roller skates inside the park;

- Smoking is prohibited inside the park. To smoke, you must go outside. The main thing is to remember to put a stamp on your hand to be let back in later;

- Alcohol consumption (if you can somehow get it inside) is strictly prohibited, as in any other public place in the UAE. Even for the smell can not only not be allowed inside the park, and even call the police and fined. Read more in our review "Alcohol in the UAE";

- During the month of Ramadan all cafes and restaurants inside remain open, but it is recommended to eat and drink only inside these establishments. Read more about the rules of Ramadan in our review "Ramadan in the UAE";

- There is a dress code in the park, although it is not very strict. Read more about the dress code in our review "What is not allowed in the UAE";

- On the peculiarities of traveling to the UAE with children, read our great review "To the UAE with children - what you need to know".
