From Hurghada to Cairo and back

Page update - Aug 31, 2023

Many tourists in hotels in Hurghada want to go to Cairo at least for a day - to see the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx, and other sights. On this page, we will tell you how to get there cheaply or (and) quickly. Consider all options: bus, cab, transfer, plane, excursions, car rental.

The prices, timetables, and other information on this page were updated in August 2023. Recently, intercity bus tickets in Egypt went up. The price increase is due to the recent fall in the Egyptian currency. See all the current prices below on this page.

Distance between Hurghada and Cairo

In a straight line - 250 miles (400 kilometers).

By road - 285 miles (460 kilometers).

How many days in Cairo?

In one day, you can see the most important sights in Cairo - the Great Pyramids, the Cairo Museum, the Cairo Citadel, and the Mohammed Ali Mosque. It is possible, but tediously, and you will have a lack of time at these sights.

However, we recommend going for two days. Then you can see a lot of other sights: the Old City, the Khan el-Khalili market, museums on Gezira Island, spend an evening in the Mall of Egypt, the largest shopping mall in Egypt.

Room in a cheap hotel in Cairo, somewhere near the Cairo Metro station, will cost 40-50 dollars a night. The hotel is easy to book through booking.com or other similar websites.

By cab

Naturally, no cab driver will agree to drive for such a long distance if paid by the taximeter. You have to negotiate a fixed price. Cab drivers usually quote a price of about 150 US dollars. However, you can still bargain with them. You can lower the price to 120 or 130 US dollars.

Just for reference, at the time this page was updated (September 2022) the cost of such a trip according to the taximeter is 2,500 Egyptian pounds (85 US dollars). However, as we have already said, no driver will agree for a taximeter ride.

You can save a lot if you take a cab for the whole day. That is, a cab takes you to Cairo early in the morning, drives through the city with you and takes you back to Hurghada in the evening. It is convenient for you and more interesting for the cab driver, because he/she will not go back empty. In this case, you can agree on the price - 150-200 dollars.

A cab is a very profitable option if you are traveling with three or four people. However, it is also very unprofitable if you travel alone.

Transfer on the Internet

It is possible to order a transfer on the Internet, but it is expensive - 160-170 US dollars. Cabs are cheaper, even if you don't haggle and agree to the first price offered by the cab driver.

In addition, the transfer is very inconvenient, because you will be tied to a certain time. You can take a cab at any time. Of course not every cab driver will agree to go that far at once, not all of them are easy-going. But you can ask several cab drivers, and someone will agree. We strongly recommend negotiating with the driver in advance.

By bus

Traveling by bus through the desert is now comfortable and safe. Long gone are the days when buses used to travel part of the route with a military convoy.

Bus transportation on the route Hurghada-Cairo is provided by two transport companies Go Bus (aka El Gouna) and Super Jet Bus Company. They have about the same prices, level of comfort in buses, and travel time.

The price of a one-way ticket ranges from 230 to 450 Egyptian pounds, depending on the bus class. For the exchange current rates, see our review "Money in Egypt".

Travel time is 6-8 hours.

Since the trip is quite long, we recommend choosing the expensive class - Elite or Royal. Then you will have a comfortable seat, WiFi, free coffee and snacks, air conditioning and an LCD panel with movies and games. These buses have a clean restroom, usually located in the middle of the cabin.

Buses leave every half hour or hour. There are night runs that leave at 1 am or 2 am, arriving in Cairo in the morning at 8 am or 9 am. Look at go-bus.com for the current timetable.

There is no need to buy tickets in advance, because the buses on this route are never full, except for some pre-holiday days. For a calendar of the public holidays, see our page "Holidays in Egypt".

Important! From Hurghada, the buses leave from the bus stations on El-Nasr Street, which is in the center of the city. Go Bus and Super Jet have DIFFERENT bus stations 700 meters (2,300 feet) away from each other. When you get a cab from the hotel to the bus station, you must tell the cab driver which bus station you want to go to.

And one more important point! If you want to buy tickets in advance, then use the website go-bus.com, where you will be able to choose seats. Also Go Bus has an app for iOS and Android, where you can see the timetables and buy tickets.

Super Jet has a website superjet.com.eg, where you can buy tickets, but at the time of updating this page (September 2022), the site is only available in Arabic.

And one more important point! In Cairo, buses arrive at different points in the city, depending on which bus you take. You can come either to Tahrir Square, or in the Almasa area, or in the Nasr City area, or Giza. Accordingly, if you want to see the pyramids, take the bus to Giza. Then you will save on cabs to your destination.

Traveling by bus in Egypt has many nuances. To avoid unpleasant surprises on the trip and to be prepared for all situations, read the detailed review of our editor-in-chief "How to use buses in Egypt".

By airplane

The air route Hurghada-Cairo is quite busy - about 10 flights a day by EgyptAir and NILE AIR.

The ticket prices are from 100 US dollars for a round-trip ticket. But we want to warn you that the low prices are only on some morning flights. The average price for a round trip ticket is 130 US dollars.

Flight time is one hour. However, you need to arrive at the airport in advance, go through a security check, and wait to board the flight. Of course, it is faster by plane, but the time advantage is not so great. The actual travel time is about 3 hours.

Tickets are available on all the popular services on the Internet - skyscanner and similar.

Important moment! We strongly recommend buying tickets in advance. About a week ahead, travel agencies begin to buy tickets for their customers. The prices can go up dramatically, but sometimes the prices go down.

Rent a car

Rent a car in Egypt for about 50 US dollars a day. Driving a rental car is very profitable.

However, think about how willing you are to spend 6-7 hours driving there and 6-7 hours back? And will you want to see the sights after 6-7 hours behind the wheel?

In addition, in Egypt, local drivers are not disciplined, the traffic rules are not respected. Driving on the Egyptian roads is dangerous and bad for your nerves. According to the statistics, 75 people per 100,000 cars die in Egypt every year, while in the US it is 14 only. So draw your own conclusions!

Excursions

Prices for excursions are quite reasonable. A full-day excursion with a flight costs 180 to 200 US dollars, with a bus ride costs 70 to 80 US dollars.

However, the tour has its obvious disadvantages. First, only the Great Pyramids and the Cairo Museum are shown. You will not see the Mohammed Ali Mosque or the Cairo Citadel. In addition, you will lose time in some stores, where they usually take tourists. This is unpleasant.

Comparison of options

See the table below for the total cost of the trip. The cost does NOT include the price of the trip from the hotel to the airport or bus station.

Important tips for tourists

- You will certainly need Egyptian pounds on this trip. There are only a few places in Cairo where you can pay in dollars. Read our review "Currency exchange in Egypt";

- Some tourists do a very cunning thing. They look in their hotel for fellow travelers from their countrymen. Cab is the ideal option in this case;

- Remember that with a bracelet on your arm you will be an ideal prey for pickpockets in Cairo. Try to arrange with the hotel to have the bracelet cut off for the trip, and put a new one on your return;

- Don't forget to take your documents with you on your trip. Passport and insurance are a must, just in case anything can happen;

- Do not forget the headgear and cover your shoulders, so as not to get burned. Read about the clothes set on the trip in our review "What to take with you to Egypt".
